The Missouri Alliance for Retired Americans

The mission of the Alliance for Retired Americans is to ensure social and economic justice and full civil rights for all citizens so that they may enjoy lives of dignity, personal and family fulfillment and security.

A primary objective of the Alliance is to enroll and mobilize retired union members and other senior and community activists into a nationwide grassroots movement advocating a progressive political and social agenda—one that respects work and strengthens families. The long-term goal of the Alliance is to become a leading voice for older Americans. By engaging in important political battles to protect and preserve programs vital to the health and economic security of older Americans, the Alliance will gain recognition as the country’s leading progressive grassroots senior organization. Dislocated Workers Program

Transition Teams for Laid-Off Workers

The Transition Team concept is based on the assumption that workers anticipating a layoff are more likely to ask knowledgeable peers or “co-workers” about the available programs and services. The Missouri AFL-CIO Coordinators train Transition Teams at companies experiencing layoffs throughout the state of Missouri. These teams act as information centers for their fellow workers.

A Transition Team ideally consists of a small number of union and/or company employees, who both the union and/or management agree could be peer counselors. These workers are trained by the MO AFL-CIO Coordinators to serve as a resource for the other soon-to-be dislocated workers, both union and/or non-union.

During the one or two day training session, the Transition Team learns about the many free programs and services available to the dislocated workers, such as: Missouri Career Center, Dislocated Worker Program, Division of Family Services, Employment Security, United Way, Social Security, and other social service agencies. The Transition Team will meet face-to-face with representatives from these different programs so they are able to refer the dislocated worker to a specific contact person when questions, problems or a specific need arise.

Once the Transition Team is trained they should be easily accessible to the workers by having a location at or near the company, or at the union hall. The Transition Team would be available at these locations to answer employees’ specific questions. Information about available programs and services will also be made available at these locations.

The Transition Team should remain in place until all layoffs have occurred and preferably longer depending upon the need for their expertise.
